Day 1: Addis Ababa ✈ Jimma - Bonga
We will take short national flight down to Jimma in the Southwest of Ethiopia (departing in the early morning and arriving before lunch time). Here we will have lunch and meet our local guide. Then we drive 2 hours to Bonga, located in the ‘Kafa Biosphere Reserve’. Our guesthouses are just outside town, and we are surrounded by exotic gardens, acacia trees and jungle. After settling into our rooms, we will move a bit after all these flights and car drives and climb to the high point above Bonga, where the King of Kafa previously had his palace. It offers us massive views of the beautiful area that is ours to explore during the next days. Overnight: Guesthouse in Bonga
Day 2: Bonga
The local team at Tatmara Coffee Plantation welcomes us today, introducing us to our first experience of the famous Ethiopian coffee ceremony. We enjoy an interesting and educational walking tour of the facilities and processes. After lunch at Bonga, we take a 40 minutes drive to a beautiful 3hr walk (round trip) through a wild forest to the ‘Mother Tree’ in Mankira Wild Coffee Forest – the oldest wild coffee tree in the region. Overnight: Guesthouse in Bonga
Day 3: Bonga – Jimma
Today is about our senses – views, sounds, smells and tastes! We begin the morning with a 2km walk to see the beautiful Barta waterfall and a nearby bee farm. We see the hives, taste the honey, and can buy it directly as souvenir. We return to Bonga for lunch and a visit afterwards a family-run spice farm. Then we drive from Bonga to Jimma, on the way we visit the ancient Adaracha Medhanealem Church and the natural bridge Gurguto/Egziher dildiy (meaning God’s bridge). Overnight: Hotel in Jimma
Day 4: Jimma ✈ Addis Ababa
After breakfast we visit the colourful palace of Abba Jifar, King of the Gibe Kingdom of Jimma, the largest and most powerful of the five kingdoms of Gibe, which was established in the early 19th Century. We take lunch and then the next flight to Addis Ababa. Here we continue with history, visiting Mount Entoto, where the first palace of the founder of Addis Ababa, Emperor Menelik II, is located. We close the day with dinner at a traditional restaurant and transfer you to the airport.
